Walking With Your Feet Apart
Transmasculine Sample Activity
Information:
Men typically have broader shoulders and a higher centre of gravity than women. A wider stance provides increased stability and balance to compensate for these differences. Additionally, societal norms and learned behaviours can contribute to variations in gait, with men often adopting a more assertive or dominant posture that includes a wider stride.
Steps:
  1. Begin by finding an area you can walk in a straight line for at least 10 steps.
  2. Try to either draw a straight line on the floor or use the pattern in tiles or a carpet to help you judge the distance your feet are apart.
  3. Begin walking slowly, focusing on your feet placement. Imagine walking on alternating stepping stones.
  4. Your feet do not need to be distanced out further than your hips but ensure that your outer edge of your feet is out further than the edge of your hips.
  5. Gradually increase your pace while maintaining your feet placement until you are walking slightly faster than your normal pace.
Do this exercise for 2 minutes.
Tips:
Consider filming yourself to observe and refine your technique.
Try to incorporate this foot placement when walking for the rest of the day.
